WS Learning Technologies

Breaking news....Three new CWAs have been published in June 2010 and are now available from our homepage (under "CEN Workshop Agreements") !!!!!!!

The objective of the CEN Workshop Learning Technologies is to encourage the effective development and use of relevant and appropriate standards for learning technologies for Europe by:

•    Encouraging participation in global initiatives in order to ensure that diverse European requirements are properly addressed by those global initiatives
•    Creating specifications, agreements, guidelines or recommendations where appropriate, i.e. when no initiative addressing the identified requirements is in place yet or when global solutions developed elsewhere need to be localized to the European requirements
•    Providing a forum for the development and implementation of requirements-driven Learning Technologies e.g. through the development of a network or testThe Workshop's objective is to encourage the effective development and use of relevant and appropriate bed for interoperability testing or through the creation of reference examples
•    Carefully examining and taking into account the various effects on learning and training technology standards which are due to the diversity of cultural backgrounds and languages that exists within Europe
•    Publicizing the Learning Technologies Workshop's activities and results to Relevant European projects, Technology developers and End users
•    Providing a forum for discussion for European project initiatives

The Workshop is open to, and seeks involvement from all interested parties: education and training authorities (national as well as regional), universities, providers of professional training, software producers, telecom and Internet service providers, educational publishers and broadcasters, etc.

The Learning Technologies Workshop decided, as a matter of principle, not to duplicate work already being done elsewhere, but to ensure that diverse European requirements are properly addressed by global initiatives. Specifications, agreements, guidelines or recommendations will be developed when no initiative addressing the identified requirements is in place yet or when global solutions developed elsewhere need to be localized to European requirements.

Finally, in the domain of eLearning and eTraining, considerable efforts are invested under the IST programme as well as via many national or European initiatives. Projects producing specifications, architectures, reference models, etc., with the intention of attracting broader support and recognition of their work, can use the Workshop as a useful tool for reaching a European-wide consensus on their deliverables.

Registration as a registered participant in this Workshop is made by filling in and forwarding to CEN a registration form.

As a registered participant you will be granted access to the internal Workshop documents. These password-protected documents are available online from our Livelink document server. (The server can be accessed via the "Livelink" button on the top right of the page).

You can also download a list of organisations participating in the Workshop.

The Workshop has delivered a number of CEN Workshop Agreements. In addition, the Workshop has developed a Repository of taxonomies/vocabularies for a European Learning Society , as well as a web-based repository to act as a focal access point to projects, results, activities and organizations which are relevant to the development and adoption of e-learning technology standards: the Learning Technologies Standards Observatory.

The Workshop has furthermore developed a Registry of Application Profiles in eLearning which is open to the population process.

The Workshop coordinates its activities with the work of  ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 36 "Information Technology for Learning, Education and Training".
Every 2nd meeting of the Workshop is co-located with a meeting of CEN/TC 353 "Information and Communication Technologies for Learning, Education and Training".

The next meetings will be held in:

  • Helsinki, Finland, on October 05, 2010 (CEN/TC 353 will meet at the same location on October 06, 2010)
  • Brussels, Belgium, on January 17, 2011
  • Madrid, Spain, on April 04, 2011 (CEN/TC 353 will meet at the same location on April 05, 2011)
